Who is Tonja Fortney?

You probably have never heard of Tonja Fortney. So who am I?

I am just like you… I am a Mother, Daughter, Sister, Grandmother. My family moved to North Liberty in 1999 for a fresh start as a single mother. I have a son, a daughter and a grandson that I love dearly and have worked very hard to raise them as best I can.

As far as my experience over the years, I have a background which includes many sectors including business, education, manufacturing, service and hospitality. Currently I am a Community Manager in North Liberty at Golfview Mobile Home Court. In my position that I have held for the last four years, I have worked to attract and provide many people with housing. In one way I have done this is when residents from a community nearby were forced to relocate I reached out and was able to establish a new place that they could call home.

In being in the position I am in, I have seen first hand the need for affordable attainable housing. This will definitely be one of my priorities as a council member when able is to create and improve accessibility to resources and avenues for people to obtain and keep housing for their families.

North Liberty was much smaller back in 1999 and I have seen many changes throughout the years. North Liberty has provided me and my family a place to call home and giving back to this community is the best way I can think of to do that. This will be my first time in city government or any office for that matter, but I promise every member of this community to work hard and hit the ground running for you.

Although I have not had experience in local government, I have experienced first hand what it takes in a similar setting to get things done. I was a delegate and worked my way from local to district to state delegate to represent Johnson County and Iowa for a campaign where I participated in Platform committee. On this committee our task was to create a platform that communicates our positions and goals regarding important issues facing the country. Having done that I believe has prepared me for a position like City Council Member.

I would love to meet you! I welcome your questions and will listen to your concerns and I most definitely would appreciate your vote.
